There are right ways and wrong ways to resign and getting it wrong can impact your career. Much as you may be tempted to give your employer a piece of your mind when you leave, following these guidelines will help ensure that things go as smoothly as possible:

Dont ....

Hand in your notice when you are angry or upset.

Feel obliged to provide specific reasons for your resignation.

Tell everyone else before you tell your boss.

Feel obliged to tell your boss where you are going. It is your choice whether you disclose this information.

Do ....

Inform your boss face-to-face and don’t labour on negative points about the company or the job.

Think about the questions your boss may ask you when you resign, and prepare your answers.

Write a simple letter stating the date from which your notice period will begin.

Be cooperative if you are required to help with a hand-over period.

Try to make sure your work is up to date and in order before you leave.

Prepare for your boss making you a counter offer. (See the Counter Offer section on this website)

Leave on a high. Work hard and stay as motivated as possible until your very last day.

Honor your notice period and any other terms/obligations in your contract of employment.

Above All ....

Always try to leave on good terms. A good reference is vital for all jobs in Milton Keynes!
